When lead—acid batteries are subjected to large discharges, for example; constant heavy load lifts or large electrical load demands, this action creates sulfate crystals which tend to collect on battery plates.

This collection of crystals inhibits the chemical reaction required for the battery to produce and store electricity. This is called sulfation.

 

Sulfation chemical reaction can occur due to insufficient charging; unused new batteries left to sit, or prolonged use without charging.

Though correct charging methods can revert some of this materials to its original state, not all material is reverted.

Some crystals remain on the surface plates and in the future will hinder charging.

 

Furthermore, in use or in storage, these crystals continue to enlarge and harden in time.

If left untreated a without desulfation method, these crystals will harden, deteriorate the plates and break-off with the slightest vibration.

This will lead to the battery being inefficient and unrecoverable.
